This time, a little more info about the music on the CD, where we have reached Track 4. This is“Knights of the Road”, and is the first not to feature on CD5 of the 19 CD Box Set.
We shall encounter this song again when we resume the tale of Fairport Convention proper.
Fotheringay’s version lasts 4.45 minutes, and is a magnificent Trevor Lucas rocker, of the “Truckin’” style. It is much the same as the track that would later appear on that Fairport Convention album, but with a slightly better rhythm section.
Track 5 is the only song on the CD to be counted in, and is Sandy Denny’s “ Late November”, which again I first heard on her first solo LP,“The North Star…”. This is of course on CD5 of the Box Set and lasts 4.40 minutes. Sandy sounds slightly less confident here than on her solo version, and the accompaniment is a little heavier, but this is still a marvellous song, and very creditable given the unusual way the album came into being.
Track 6 is “Restless”, and is not on CD 5 of the Box Set, being very much a Trevor Lucas song. It lasts just 2.48 minutes, but is a brilliant little piece, with timeless, classic lyrics, and a very strong melody. It has a variable refrain, which first appears as:
“Something in the wind / seems to call me like a friend”.
This really is an excellent one.
