In this post we start a consideration of the remarkable text which takes up the whole of the middle section of the back cover of the LP. I have to say at the outset that from a personal viewpoint I, as a Christian, have always disapproved of the content of this stuff, for reasons which will become immediately apparent.
Here we go:
“”Bugger,” said God, “raining again.”
“If you’re supposed to be God,” said the Arch-Angel Gabriel, balancing two tennis-balls on his racket, “I’d have thought you could have done something about it.”
God stroked his luxuriant, silvery beard. “Hmm, well, all part of the vast universal scheme, you know. Anyway a bit of rain never hurt anybody.” God threw his tennis shoes into the corner of the living-room, turned and closed and bolted the french windows. “Never hurt anybody at all.” His eyebrows arched, and the well-known penetrating gaze fell on Gabriel. “And don’t ask too many questions. Just remember who created you, cock.”
“Not to mention the common cold.” The Arch- Angel sneezed violently, and fumble in his pocket for a Kleenex. “Thanks a lot, just what I need.”
“Cause and effect, cause and effect. Nobody’s perfect you know. Except me of course, but then I have to run things around here.” ”
More of this next time, God Willing.
