On the front cover are shown little colour photos of 5 chaps. On the back cover, the group are said to be:
Jerry Donahue………………………………electric and accoustic [sic] guitars/vocals
Trevor Lucas……………………………………………….accoustic [sic] guitars/vocals
Dave Mattacks………………………………………………..drums/percussion/piano
Dave Pegg…………………………………………………..bass guitar/mandolin/vocals
David Swarbrick……………………………………………fiddle/mandolin/vocals
As will be seen, the names are arranged in alphabetical order of surname; no hierarchy is implied.
However, the remarkable truth of the situation was immediately apparent. If one takes the view that the “original” line up of a band is that appearing on the first released recording, then none of the “Rosie” line up was in it; not a single one. Compare that with the other group which we are considering, Fleetwood Mac. In the sense we are using, the group has always contained Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. OK, they are only the drummer and bass player, respectively, but Peter Green had the amazing prescience actually to name the band after them!
Fairport Convention, however, had become a completely new outfit a mere 6 years after the creation of the first Fairport Convention; so what, exactly, did “Fairport Convention” mean?
There are some clues to this philisophical, and indeed existential question, which I shall touch upon in the next post.
