As ever, I also have the 2005 luxury expanded de-luxe CD version of this one.
The insert includes a picture of a poster advertising tour dates, and the LP. It is headed:
“Schubert didn’t quite manage it but Fairport Convention have just completed their ninth. It’s a classic.”
There are 4 bonus tracks. Track 10 is the rockiest “jigs and reels” track ever, a studio recording here titled “The Devil In The Kitchen (Fiddlestix)”. The remaining three were recorded live at The Howff (London) on 23rd April (St George’s Day) 1973. This was, incidentally, almost exactly the date on which my romantic relationship with Girlfriend 24 came to an end.
Track 11 is a Bob Dylan song called “George Jackson”, performed here with perfection with the inimitable Trevor Lucas on lead vocal, and the whole ensemble on the choruses.
Track 12 is a live version of “Pleasure and Pain”. In the studio version, Dave Swarbrick sings the line “It’s not easy to see a sheep under all that fleece”. In this live version, Trevor Lucas sings this line as “It’s not easy to see the sheep under all those trees”. Oddly, that is probably the “original ” way of doing it, which is not nearly as good as the one on the LP.
Track 13 is a super truckin’ rocker belted out by Trevor Lucas, called “Six Days On The Road”.
Worthy bonus tracks indeed.
