Side 1 concludes with two truly excellent Sandy Denny songs, of different styles.
Track 5 is “Stranger to Himself” (2.51 minutes), which is a slow, heavy, ponderous lament, with a very strong and insistent beat, and in a minor flattened key. The production, as it is throughout the album, is perfect, and Sandy Denny’s voice is arguably at the very best of her career.
Track 6 ends the side, and this is “What is True?” (3.35 minutes), a much softer song of immense charm and beauty, with lyrics just as philosophical as the title suggests. It is a splendid and fitting cadence to Side 1, which has been full of good stuff.
Could Side 2 possibly keep up the standard? We shall see in due course.
