Today we continue with the first set of notes in the CD insert, written by Thor-Rune Haugen:
Trouble was: Shortly before this tour, drummer Dave Mattacks left the band. With time being much too short to hold proper auditions AND rehearsals for a new drummer to do this particular tour. Panic – cancel alert! Enter roadie Paul Warren – who had watched Mattacks from the wings many a time and knew the material quite well. “What if I tried?” He saved a night we’d all looked forward to and bravely took on the close to impossible job of replacing one of the most respercted drummers in the world. This line-up has jokingly been referred to as Fairport, mark 52 B.
“And so it was that we drifted into this medium sized concert hall. It was their first ever indoors concert in Norway. From the first beat of the first song, it was obvious that this was not going to be a “finger-in-the-ear” folk evening. Man, it was loud! Throughout the evening cakes of earwax would be splattered against the wall – especially during the highest notes of Dave Swarbrick’s fiddle solos. No wonder the man ended up partly deaf. My ears rang for days, but the memories of the music rang even louder.”
More next time.
