More today from the first set of notes in the CD insert, these having been written by Thor-Rune Haugen:
“THE GIG
Listening to the tapes of a gig you have fond memories of, can sometimes be a risky thing. And yes – you can hear mistakes made. A bum note here, a missed cue there. But that’s not the point with a band like Fairport. They were always a vulnerable band on stage. That was half their charm. No safe music machine, they always played it like they felt it and would never take the easy way out. Sandy’s introduction to One More Chance says it all. [I’ll try to spell that out for you in due course].
“Listen to Sandy Denny – the phrashing [sic], the sheer emotion. Listen to how she hangs on to that final note of Who Knows Where The Time Goes for what seems like an eternity. Before she finally, and reluctantly, decides to let it go – thereby effectively ending the evening.”
More next time.
