Oh my goodness, now we start looking at those notes…
“”THE HEXAMSHIRE LASS”
The “Nine” line-up frequently started concerts with this song. I believe this recording was from the first of two concerts at the Sydney Opera House and everyone sounds quite fresh on this take. If I remember correctly, this date was part of a “World Tour” which ended up consisting of two or three dates plus a TV show in Japan, half a dozen or so dates strewn between New Zealand and Australia and a week in a club – The Troubador – in Los Angeles. At the end of the said tour, the group was puzzled to find itself saddled with a not inconsiderable debt. Soon the reasons were made crystal clear. Aside from the dearth of dates, air fares, hotel bills and the usual expenses, our gear ended up travelling as excess baggage between Japan and New Zealand – someone who will remain nameless hadn’t heard of, or had forgotten about, cargo rates. But the punch line was that we ended up playing The Troubador for free as our bar tab at the club extended [sic; exceeded?] our fee.”
I should add, by the way, that the notes are anonymous, but my guess is that it was Dave Swarbrick who penned them.
