On this occasion, more of David Suff’s November 2006 notes in the CD liner, continuing from the heavily annotated section we left last time.
“Writing on the band’s official website (www.fairportconvention.com) Simon Nicol recalled: “Peggy and Swarb asked me if I’d come in to engineer for them. It was huge fun to be involved in. Island just gave us the keys and said “turn out the lights when you leave” so there were a lot of all-night sessions in the studio. If we made a rash experiment and wasted three hours, it didn’t matter. It wasn’t costing anything to spend hours trying out some weird organ loop then deciding it wouldn’t work.”
“Angles Brown – an outtake from the Hammersmith sessions, has recently come to light and makes its debut on this CD. Dave Pegg fondly remembers recording the first demo of the song in Swarb’s Cropredy kitchen – “me trying out the reverb as he sang, that was the beginning of my Woodworm Studios.””
More from these lengthy notes next time.
