As ever, left and right mean as you see it.
Some groups were present at the shoot in their entirety, and most remarkably in my view, all six members of Fairport Convention were there. This was my favourite version of the group, and still is.
In previous posts we have already noted the visibly shivering Sandy Denny at the bottom right, and Richard Thompson, who was one of the three there cut off from the published photo at the left edge.
At the top right corner, the back row, with glasses and curly hair, is Ashley Hutchings, previously known as Tyger Hutchings, the bass player.
At the left middle is a chap with a bobble hat on; that is the great Steve Winwood of Traffic, who was about to quit and form part of the supergroup Blind Faith. To the left of him, right on the left edge of the picture, is Ian Matthews, previously Ian MacDonald, the angelic singer and bongo player with Fairport Convention, who was to leave the band within 4 months of the photo being taken.
Right in the middle of the picture is a tall man with long hair parted in the the middle, his head tilted slightly to the left, and his eyes half closed. This is Simon Nicol, the “second fiddle” guitarist with Fairport Convention, and currently the sole original member with the band trading as Fairport Convention. To the left of him, peering out from behind his head, is Martin Lamble, the drummer, who would be dead within five months of this gathering, killed in a motor crash on the M1.
