Here once more is the edited version of the remarkable photo on the front cover of this sampler. As usual, “left” and “right” mean as you see them.
We come this time, and indeed next time, to the last of the groups who could be seen to be present at the shoot in their entirety, but here there are several ironic, time-shifted, complex and artificial aspects to the matter.
First we must consider once more the only person wearing a woolly hat, this being Stevie Winwood. In fact he “wears two hats” as he was in the line-up of the Spencer Davis Group which is sampled on the LP, and is indeed the only person present from that group, although he had left it to form Traffic about two years before the photo was taken. The other “hat” is of course in respect of Traffic, but here the plot thickens. Traffic as sampled on the album comprised four members, but only three of them were in the photo group. Stevie Winwood is one of them, of course, and to the right of him wearing sunglasses is Jim Capaldi, a second member, the third being Chris Wood, the one at the right edge wearing a white shirt and a thin tie. The missing fourth member is Dave Mason. More of these musings next time.
