Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
We continue today with the notes in the CD insert, written by Fred “Kermit” Dellar in November 1995, where he has just started quoting from the LP cover notes, which are just about to begin listing the supporting musicians:
” “The three men responsible for the brass are those who used to supply the fire in John Mayall’s very fiery Bluesbreakers. They are Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor sax, Chris Mercer on tenor and baritone, and Henry Lowther on trumpet.”
Let us pause here, as all these names are most meaningful. Chris Mercer was present at the shoot which adorned the front cover of the sampler, but he is one of the three chaps cut off at the left hand edge:
The collar of his coat and part of his left eye are just visible next to the head of Ian Matthews. As such he is the most visible of the three so cut off; of each of the other two, only a tiny bit of his hair can be seen.
Next time we shall give a little more consideration to Dick Heckstall-Smith and Henry Lowther.
