In the previous post I mentioned 4 of the tracks on the first side of the original LP. I now turn to the other 2 on side 1, which were, respectively, ” “The lord is in this place, how dreadful is this place?” ” and “No man’s land”, being tracks 4 and 5 on Side 1.
The title of track 4 derives from Jacob’s vision of a stairway to heaven, as reported in Genesis 19: 16-17: (NIV)
“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!”.”
This is a live track, quietly and forcefully hummed, with Sandy taking the lead, and little in the way of accompaniment. The atmosphere of the song is added to greatly by the sound of clinking glasses, and in particular someone walking across the room.
This dramatic piece leads brilliantly into the first of two fantastic Thompson “doom” songs on the LP, “No man’s land”. The other is Track 3 on side 2, “Tale in hard time”.
