[Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In].
As promised, today we begin a look at the marvellous music on this record. It can be observed from an earlier post that I wept when I received this LP through the post. Well, I wept again when I started playing it. The first thing I heard as the needle hit the vinyl was the soft voice of Sandy Denny counting the band in: “1, 2, 3 Turn around…”; yes, the whole ensemble comes in right on cue. This sent shivers down my spine and set my hair on end.
This track, Track 1 on Side 1, is “Close The Door Lightly When You Go”, a song written by Eric Anderson. As with Tracks 2 and 3, this was recorded on 28 May 1968 at Studio 1, 201 Piccadilly, and was broadcast on John Peel’s “Top Gear” show on 2 June 1968. It is a simply brilliant song, where Ian Matthews takes the lead vocals, with Sandy Denny in support on the harmonies. As ever, Richard Thompson’s lead guitar work is excellent, and the whole thing is nectar to the ears.
