Buying the albums sampled on “”You Can All Join In”.
The music on this record is greatly enhanced by Mike Harrison’s unique singing style, which is pure prog rock. It is slightly doomy, a bit staccato, somewhat urgent; it has just a touch of the delta blues to it; the lyrics are clearly sung but sometimes a little hard to make out; there really is no way accurately to describe it, but it works wonderfully. Throughout, the musicianship and production are perfect, and the best possible use is made of instruments at all times. Only two of the songs were not composed by the group, and the ones composed by them all have excellent lyrics and melodies. It is a truly fine album, and opens with:
“I Think I’m Going Weird” (3.19). This has a dramatic, beaty, minor key intro. It is distinctly spooky, but recognizable as a very catchy pop song. It has a great tune and great lyrics, with faultless delivery. Splendid stuff.
Track 2 is the one selected for the sampler, and one of the two songs not written by the band. We shall have a look at it next time.
