Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
Track 2 on Side 2 of the LP is “Tobacco Road”, and this a dramatic and brilliant version of the song. Moreover, perhaps better than any other, it perfectly showcases Gary Wright’s amazing voice, which of course was not always falsetto, and when not, it had a shining timbre all of its own. Furthermore, this was the title track of the version of the LP that was sold in the USA. Nevertheless, it is not one of the group’s own compositions, and for my money is the weakest track on the album. This song does have a feature, though, which as far as I know is UNIQUE, in that the towards its end, the opening couple of bars of the NEXT song appear as an interruption, and indeed does this TWICE! It is something which has a very pleasing effect, not least because the next song is yet another truly brilliant “stately rock” thing called “It Hurts You So”, a near perfect group composition. This brightens up “Tobacco Road” no end.
