Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
Today we again continue with the notes written by Patrick Cambell-Lyons, from where we left off last time; Nirvana have just been signed to Island Records:
“After a photo session with Gered Mankowitz, the top fashion and rock photographer of the 60’s [sic], Nirvana was to be launched to the press and the public with a live show at the Saville Theatre in the West End of London, sharing the bill with Traffic, Spooky Tooth and Jackie Edwards, a great songwriter and performer. Our first stage performance received mixed notices and some of the reviews in the music press I remember, “The music of Nirvana is like chamber music with a rock transfusion”…”Classical pop with surrealistic overtones interwoven in the text”…”Acid rock in a placid setting” [all these descriptions are quite accurate, by the way]. We performed our set within a drawing room atmosphere, dressed in expensive kaftans, with the cello centre stage. As the curtains opened to the first bars of “Tiny Goddess” played solo on the cello, I saw the eyes and mouths of the packed audience open as one, and a gasp of amazement spread throughout the theatre. I really don’t remember much about our performance, other than the fact that my body became very sweaty, and when the curtains came across as we faded on “I Believe In Magic” my legs would not move and I felt I was stuck on stage.”
More next time.
