Today we continue with “Melanie Blue”‘s notes in the CD insert:
“The initial line-up was quickly put together, with Patrick (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Alex (keyboards), they added Ray Singer (Alex’s writing partner from the Kassner deal) on guitar, Brian Henderson (from Port of Spain, Trinidad) on bass, Sylvia A. Schuster (from the Royal Academy of Music) on cello, and Michael Coe (an orchestral arranger) on viola and french horn.
“With four beautiful songs already written, Alex and Patrick started a tour of suitable record companies. After knocking on a few doors they found themselves in Muff Winwood’s Island office. The boys began the first song and Muff stopped them, calling in Jimmy Miller to hear them. Miller sat miming imaginary drums to the tunes. They were offered a contract on the spot – Chris Blackwell agreed that they were, indeed, unique and excitedly booked them into the tiny Marquee studios to demo a few songs. “Trapeze” and “Goodbye Baby Bunting” were recorded with the original group all present. The whole band never got to record as a group ever again, as from the start they were augmented by some of the best musicians available.”
