Today we continue with “Melanie Blue”‘s notes in the CD insert:
“The Olympic studio sessions on 21st June 1967, [sic] produced two songs for their debut 45 “Tiny Goddess” and “I Believe In Magic”. The recording of “Tiny Goddess” was majestic, with Jimmy Miller on drums it built into a series of peaks, giving the song light and shade. Blackwell was not convinced. He had envisioned a more Procol Harum feel, light classical overtones with a pop song underneath. A further session was booked, this time at Pye studios, and a second version was taped.
“To launch the group Blackwell added them to a gig at London’s Saville Theatre, alongside other Island acts; Art [see above] (who had just changed their name from the VIPs), Jackie Edwards and Traffic [see way above!]. Reviews from the time were ecstatic “Classical pop with surrealistic overtones… ,[sic]” gushed one, “Chamber music with a rock transfusion… ,{sic again]” stated another. The evening was arranged with Nirvana going on first. The stage was set up to resemble an Edwardian drawing room, with carpets and potted plants. The curtain rose to the opening chords of “Tiny Goddess”, revealing the band in their new multi-coloured silk threads. Patrick remembers the entire audience’s jaws drop and an audible murmur of whispered awe as they took it all in.”
