Today we continue with “Melanie Blue”‘s notes in the CD insert:
“By June [1968] work had begun on the 2nd album. “Rainbow Chaser” was one of the first tracks attempted. To get the right effects, Brian Humphries, the engineer, had to slow and speed up the backing tapes while adding vocals and trumpets. In the process they discovered an odd sound that the out of sync tapes produced – the phasing effect. Others had already experienced the joys of “out-of-phase” recordings being imperceptibly slowed and speeded up across each other to produce the rushing “skying sounds” – in fact John Peel had “phased” an entire radio programme one Sunday afternoon in June [1968] – creating a psychedelic pot-pourri of music that contained everything from the Monkees to Marvin Gaye. Brian made the decision to “phase” the whole of “Rainbow Chaser” track [sic], the first since Toni Fisher’s “Big Hurt” on Top Rank in 1960.”
