We continue today with the music on this LP.
We come now to Track 5 on Side 1, which is “Trapeze”. This one has a truly haunting melody for the verses, contrasting vastly with a “circus swirl” chorus.
Side 1 ends with Track 6 thereon, which is a minor masterpiece. It is a short, simple but quite brilliant instrumental called “The Show Must Go On”, and is arguably the best thing this group ever did.
It effortlessly combines the Greek exuberance which Alex brings with the classic Gaelic melancholy which Patrick contributes to the show, and it it is this combination which makes the track so utterly extraordinary. It is otherwise very difficult to explain how a short, simple instrumental could be so good. It only lasts 2.37 minutes, but they are sheer bliss. It introduces itself with a magic harp/cello/guitar section, which is soon joined by a flute, with a zither in the middle 8. This is music to take to a desert island.
I must say that Side 2 is not as good as Side 1, but we inevitably come to it next time. It is still pretty good, though!
