Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
We continue today with Phil Sutcliffe’s notes from the insert from the expanded CD. Free have just formed, as if by magic – see previous post:
“Free hit the ground running. Abetted by Alexis Korner’s connections and organised by Fraser’s remarkable business head – the basskid collected their gig money, paid their expenses, wages and the agent’s cut – they were propelled by stoked-up musical passion. “We were hell-bent on what we did” Rodgers says. “I didn’t care if I lived or died but for the band.”
“They drove their Morris 1800 van all over the country, playing every night and building a reputation fast. Within weeks Island’s founder Chris Blackwell signed them and by early October they were popping in to Morgan, a small London studio, whenever they had a spare day, to record their debut album (the studio reels show sessions on October 8, 11, 12, 22 and 31).”
More from these brilliant notes next time, when we will learn something about the album’s unique title.
