Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
We left the liner notes of the expanded CD at the point where the new band were looking for a bass player.
For me, Andy Fraser was always the most fascinating member of Free. His appearance was striking, looking a bit like a Red Indian; and uniquely, the bass played lead parts in much of the music. In a way, he sort of seemed to be in charge.
And all this despite being by far the youngest guy in the group, born on 3 July 1952, of a Guyanese father and an English mother. The liner notes reveal he was in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers for 6 weeks, at the end of which he found himself via Mike Vernon (see Fleetwood Mac posts above) linked with Kossoff and Kirke.
Well, they gelled, and you can get the full story from the CD insert. The fact remains that the chap playing the bass, and co-author of two of the songs, had just turned 16 when the album was recorded.
