Buying the LPs sampled on Nice Enough to Eat.
There are indeed 4 tracks on the “comprenhesive” CD not specifically referred to before.
Track 10 is “Sweet Caroline”, which was the B-side of the single “Dear Jill” released on Island WIP 6059 in May 1969. This is a pleasant enough romp, very much indeed like “It’s Only Love”; even to the main melodies of each. However, this one does not have the “quiet bits” which take “It’s Only Love” into a different sphere; but it does have marvelous solos in the middle, first guitar then sax.
Track 13 is “Same Old Story”, an absolutely brilliant Pig rocker, written by Mick Abrahams around the old “same old story, same old lies” motif. This was released as a single WIP 6078 in May 1970.
Track 14 is the B-side, “Slow Down”, an old rock’n’roll standard written by Larry Williams, which the Pig certainly do justice to, but is nothing special. I first came across this song in a Beatles version, as Track 6 Side 2 of an LP called “The Beatles “Rarities””.
Without doubt, however, the 4th of the 4 is the best. This is Track 15 “Meanie Mornay”, from the “Getting To This” sessions. As far as I know, this little gem is only available on this CD, which is a great shame. It is pure, brilliant, sparkling, classic Pig, with Mick Abrahams in fine form, and the drums and bass thundering along to give that uniquely Pig fashion “wall of sound” effect.
