Buying the LPs sampled on Nice Enough to Eat (the last one!)
Track 3 on Side 1 is “Roy Rogers” (5.37). This is another truly excellent song, and probably my second favourite on the LP. Rupert Bear makes an appearance in this track; it may be recalled that he can be seen peering out to starboard from The Serene Boy on the back cover. He is, incidentally, flanked on his left side there by two cats, the upper of which is a black one.
The song has a genuinely stirring chorus, in a sort of music hall style, and some wonderful lyrics, particularly towards the end, where the final verse begins:
“I wrote this song on my bank overdraft; a noble piece of craft….”
And the final rousing harmonised chorus centres around the couplet:
“And the sub-manager says that I owe lots of bread;
Hey hey, that’s no way to treat a friend.”
Does anyone remember sub-managers at banks? Or even Bank Managers for that matter. But somehow “computer generated letter” wouldn’t sound so good, would it?
