Buying the LPs sampled on Nice Enough to Eat (the last one!)
Another dip into Adrian Whittaker’s liner notes for the “Halcyon Days” CD, and in particular its comments on the “ship” picture on the back cover of the LP.
There are some tracks on this CD which actually predate “Kip”, and one of these is “HMS Avenger”, which
“…dates from very early Dr SS days. Tim B says Brian Tench brought in the original Times article on which the narrative is based. Though it was very much a collaborative live performance piece, it was originally slated for Kip and a version of the ship even appears in Tim’s graphic on the back cover.”
The centre pages of the insert show, in dramatic black and white, C.P. Williams’ painting “The Loss of HMS Steam Frigate Avenger”. Turn over the page, and on the right half is the original Irish Times front page of Tuesday April 1, 1969, where the headline is “Wreck of the HMS Avenger”. The story, however, relates to events which occurred on 20 December 1847, in which the ship was lost in a severe storm.
A central part of the report reads as follows:
“They clustered together, exclaiming, “Oh, my God, Sir, we are lost – we are lost!” Mr. Rooke, finding that all his arguments were of no avail, crossed the deck for the purpose of helping Mr. Betts in lowering the port cutter. They were joined by Dr. Strange, the surgeon…”
