[Buying the albums sampled on “Picnic”.]
Under the track listings section on the back cover of the gatefold sleeve, in two neat columns, are these details of the personae dramatis:
“Instrumental settings by Dolly Collins
Adam Skeaping bass viol, violone
Roderick Skeaping rebec, treble and bass viol
Oliver Brookes bass viol
Michael Laird cornett
Richard Lee descant and treble recorder
Alan Lumsden sackbut
Christopher Hogwood harpsichord
Dolly Collins organ
Gillian Ried bells
David Munrow soprano and alto crumhorn, bass rackett, tenor sordun, treble recorder
Chorus
“The Home Brew” (Michael Clifton, Ray Worman, John Fordham) plus Royston Wood, Steve Ashley, John Morgan”
There then follow some of the most glorious sleeve notes ever written, which are anonymous, but I guess were written by Shirley’s then husband, Austin John Marshall. At the end of the second column of the notes are these credits:
“Produced by Austin John Marshall
Musical Director David Munrow
Engineer Peter Mew
Sleeve pictures: inside spread, John Harrison
Session pictures, Peter Sanders; pastoral [presumably the tall thin one showing Shirley as an arc] by David Montgomery
Front cover: ceramic by Michael Clifton, who also made the Hobby-Ram for the Chingford Morris men.”
Next time, to the notes themselves…
