Buying the albums sampled on “You Can All Join In”.
We now turn, for the first of several times, to the music on this truly classic album. Many of you, I am sure, will have realised that this one had to be kept to the last of this series, as it is the “definitive” one. Track one on Side 1 of the LP, and Track 1 on the CD, is of course nothing other than “You Can All Join In”! Naturally, this was the track selected for the sampler, which thus became the title track of the sampler. It is a brilliant, jaunty, genuinely sing-along song, written by Dave Mason, who takes the lead vocal and plays acoustic guitar. Steve Winwood plays lead guitar and bass guitar, Chris Wood plays tenor sax, and Jim Capaldi plays drums. These are the infectious opening words:
“Here’s a little song you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own words up if you want to
Any old words that you think will do.”
Track 2 is the Winwood/Capaldi composition “Pearly Queen”, covered of course by Tramline [see above]. On this one, Steve does lead vocal, organ, guitar and bass guitar. Chris plays flute, Dave harmoica, and Jim drums. Island records showed a bit of a sense of humour here in the listing on the sampler:
