Fleetwood Mac -“Tusk” – The Music (8)

February 14, 2015 · by listentomusicanywhere

The penultimate track on the album is Track 19 on the CD, and is the Title Track “Tusk” (3.36 minutes).  As far as I know, this is the only album which has the title track as the last but one on the record.  It is a Lindsey Buckingham song which kicks off with a jungle beat and has all the singers doing a chanting laid back vocal.  The jungle beat gets stronger and more livelly as the song progresses, with the final couplet of Standard English being much louder and very startling:

“Don’t say that you love me!

Just tell me that you want me!”.

At this point a strong Egyptian beat takes over which leads to a crashing finale, which is built up to by the closing lyrics, which comprise the exclamation “Tusk!” 13 times.  This is bearly audible in the music and sounds like “Tsk”.  This is a truly remarkable, but most enjoyable ditty.

The album closes with what is track 20 on the CD, “Never Forget” (3.40 minutes).  This is a splendid Christine McVie song which she sings, with the other singers providing backing vocals on the refrains.  It is far and away the most cheerful song on the record, and makes an utterly superb cadence to it.  The lyrics close thus:

“Come on baby, now don’t you be cold

Just you remember that is gold

Ooh ooh

We will never forget tonight”.

Track 12 on the CD is “That’s Enough For Me”, which at 1.48 minutes is the shortest track on the album. This is a Lindsey Buckingham song, and once again it is another busy, almost frantic one.  Both girls sing on it very well, making it an intensively effective burst of stuff.  The lyrics can be summarised by the way they open:

“Everytime that you make me smile

It’s the same old way it used to be

And that’s enough for me

Everytime that sleep don’t come it’s the same old pain that used to be”.

Track 13 is “Brown Eyes” (4.27 minutes), and is a Christine McVie song which she sings, all the vocalists joining in the middle 8.  It is a perfectly acceptable pop song, with just a hint of the old blues feel.  There are only two verses comprising the lyrics:

When you look at me with those brown eyes

What do you want to do

Do you have to have me

The way that I want you

I want you

When you look at me with those brown eyes

Wat do you want to say

And are you just another liar

Will you take me all the way

All the way”.

Track 9 on the CD is “Not That Funny” (3.19 minutes).  This is a Lindsey Buckingham song, and is, and has always been, my favourite song on the whole album.  It is curiously jolly, with an absolutely great tune between the verses and as the middle 8.  It is a real stomper, and lifts the spirits wonderfully.

Track 10 closed Side 2 of the vinyl version, and is “Sisters Of The Moon” (4.36 minutes).  This is a Stevie Nicks song, with a long intro which establishes a firm beat.  She sings this one, which is in a very dramatic minor key, making the piece extremely effective.  It closes thus:

“So we make our choices

When there is no choice

And we listen to their voices

Ignoring our own voice”.

Side 3 of the LPs opened with what is Track 11 on the CD, “Angel” (4.53 minutes).  This is a Stevie Nicks composition, and a very good pop song.  She sings, with Christine McVie joining in the refrains. Some words from it:

“So I close my eyes softly

Til I become part of the wind

That we all long for sometime

And to those that I love

Like a ghost through a fog

Like a charmed hour

And a haunted song

And the angel of my dreams”.

Side 2 of the vinyl version, which is Track 6 on the CD, is “What Makes You Think You’re The One” (3.28 minutes). This is yet another odd Leslie Buckingham song, with a “dustbin banging” percussion part, and where Stevie Nicks does the vocals.  However, there is an extended, truly haunting tune in the middle 8 which makes the whole thing actually work very well indeed.  The chorus goes like this:

“Every little bit

Is there

To see

Every little bit

Of you

And me”.

Track 7 is “Storms”, which at 5.28 minutes is the longest song on the album.  This is a Stevie Nicks song, which has a gentle introduction.  She is solo on the verses, with all the vocalists joining in the refrain.  The song features a pleasing middle 8 instrumental, and some tasteful lead guitar.  From the lyrics:

“So I try to say

Goodbye my friend

I’d like to leave you with something warm

But never have I been a blue calm sea

I have always been a storm”.

Track 8 is “That’s All For Everyone” (3.04 minutes) and is a Lindsey Buckingham song.  It is a good pop number, and for a change this one is fairly straightforward.  These words feature early in the lyrics and and are repeated wholly or in part throughout:

“I call for everyone

I cry for more

That’s all for everyone

Must be exactly what I need

That’s all”.
